How to get rid of trash?

The problem: Why you have maggots in your trash can

While you may see them at almost any time of year, you’re most likely to run into maggots during the hot summer months, when high temperatures and humidity create the perfect conditions. Garbage rots more quickly in the heat, and the resulting smells can begin a maggot bonanza:

“Maggots are fly larvae, ” explains Ron Harrison, PhD in Entomology and Director of Technical Services at Orkin, one of the nation’s largest residential and commercial pest-control services. “Rotting food or waste material produces methane gas, which flies are attracted to. They then lay their eggs on the rotting waste, providing an instant food source once the larvae hatch.”

The good news is that you’re not alone: nobody likes to admit it, but maggots are a common garbage problem, so common that there are plenty of proven measures for eliminating them (and, best of all, to keep them from coming back.)

Step 1: Wait until trash collection day

It’s easier to kill maggots when there’s no trash in the can.

Plus, if you don’t clean your can after you’ve killed the maggots, flies will re-populate it within just a few days.

So if you only want to tackle this once, wait for your trash to be emptied before you get your hands dirty.

Step 2: Tip boiling water all over the maggots

You could spend a bunch of money buying ‘diatomaceous earth’ to sprinkle in your can. Or you could get a ‘not completely’ safe pesticide called permetrin.

But there’s an easier solution.

canBoiling water.

It’s free, it’s quick, it’s effective, and it kills maggots in an instant.

Here’s what you need to do.

Once your trash can is empty of all trash, boil a kettle and tip the contents over the maggots.

After a good dousing with boiling water all those maggots will be good and dead.

But the war ain’t over yet, so keep on reading.

Step 3: Clean your trash can

The lifecycle of flies is extremely short, and if you don’t take preventative measures the maggots will probably return within a week.

If your can is dirty inside, you should clean it out thoroughly.

Get a brush and some hot soapy water then scrub. Or call your local trash-can cleaning service, if you have one.

Step 4: Get some of these jumbo cart-liners

“These huge liners will keep your roll-away cart spotless and maggot-free”

Here’s a little-known way to make sure every last maggot from here-on-in gets taken away with the rest of your trash on collection day.

Simply line your newly cleaned cart with some of these jumbo size trash bags. Your whole week’s trash goes inside one of these giant bags, and the whole lot – maggots and all – vanish on collection day.

They are available for and roll-away carts, and they work like magic.

Start using these bags and the only thing you’ll have left on collection day is a sparkling clean garbage can – and a strangely satisfied feeling.

Step 5: Secure the cart-liner with a super-sized elastic band

“These elastic bands will keep your can-liner as secure as Fort Knox. No maggots inside your cart ever again.”

rubberbandYes, cart liners work wonders, but if the liner slips down inside, food waste may still leak out leading to more odor and maggots.

That’s why we recommend you keep the bag in place with these super-sized elastic bands.

They’re cheap, and they keep the trash bag perfectly in position ensuring your trash cart never becomes a smelly maggot trap again.

And there you have it.

No more smells.
No more flies.
No more maggots in your can.
No more scrubbing.

Ever.

“no maggots in the can (they’re all in the bag) and no disgusting cleanup.”

We bought these 64 gallon bags, and now garbage day is as simple as roll your can to the sidewalk, pull out one big and sturdy bag from the can, ET VOILA! done – no maggots in the can (they’re all in the bag) and no disgusting cleanup.
We bought a couple rubber bands to hold the bags and now our only regret is that we didn’t think about this many years ago.

“Keeps the cans clean and helps eliminate the smell and mess that attracts flies”

I love these bags! I have them at home and at our subdivision pool for the big rolling trash collectors. Keeps the cans clean and helps eliminate the smell and mess that attracts flies, etc. Nice and strong. Keeps trash from flying all over on trash collection day.

“…everything goes in the trash truck, stink and all.”

I am tired of cleaning my garbage can. The 95 gallon bag lines my big garbage can for trash pick-up. Before I roll it to the street I tie the top with a cable tie and everything goes in the trash truck, stink and all. My can comes back clean ready for another big bag liner. I love it!

“I don’t know why I didn’t think of using a liner sooner… no flies, no odor”

So, after 2 weeks of tiptoeing ’round the can on my way to my van and spending time bleaching, bagging watermelon rinds, and hoping the neighbors don’t complain, I decided there had to be a better way! I don’t know why I didn’t think of using a liner sooner. I’ve been using these bags for a week now and I can honestly say there are no flies, there is no odor, and the bag fits my 95 Gallon Rollout Trash Cart with plenty of ‘sag-room’ so no worries.
